Hi Dorie,
I wish I could help. I tried to find out what your book is but I wasn't successful. Do you remember any other information about it, publisher, publishing date, the author's first name, the character's name, anything?
I added your email to the comment, hopefully someone can help you eventually!

Please help. I'm looking for a novel by a Canadian women writer I read over 20 years ago. I can't remember author or title. Contemporary times. in the beginning of the novel the narrator earned money by having a fries and chips shop in a converted out house. She went on to college, and hooked up with a male exploiter for a while. I must read this novel again. You may publish my email dlarue@lsus.edu> Thanks.
